What isHavening®”?

Havening is a neuroscience-based therapeutic modality that utilizes specific sensory input patterns to alter neural pathways associated with emotional distress and psychological trauma. Developed in 2012, after years of empirical research in neurobiology, this approach leverages the brain’s neuroplasticity through precise touch protocols. When combined with targeted cognitive exercises, this method effectively disrupts the encoding of traumatic memories and stress responses.

When an event or experience is perceived as traumatic or very stressful it becomes immutably encoded, often with life-altering consequences. However, recent research from the field of neuroscience has shown us how it’s possible to modify this encoding. The Havening Techniques are methods which are designed to change the brain to de-traumatize the memory and permanently remove its negative effects from both our psyche and body.

  • “The Training That Made It Click”

I couldn't have asked for a better introduction to somatic modalities generally, and Havening Techniques specifically, than training with Holli and Nicole at Midwest Haven. They're not just skilled trainers; they're genuinely invested in helping you succeed. Their teaching is clear and approachable, and they give the kind of feedback that actually makes you better. Whenever I had questions, I got real, thoughtful answers, not canned responses. I walked away from the training feeling ready to actually use what I'd learned, and that's because of how Holli and Nicole showed up as trainers.

The first time I used Havening with a dysregulated client and they said, "I can't believe how much better I feel," the surprise and relief on their face said everything. That's when I truly understood what all the training had been building toward and just how transformational it can be. As a newer therapist, it feels incredible to have this tool in my practice. Havening has fundamentally changed the way I work, giving me an additional pathway to help clients when words aren't enough.” - Colleen Martin, LGSW

  • “Thorough, Accessible, and Immediately Applicable”

“I wasn't sure what to expect when I signed up for Nicole and Holli's Havening Techniques training. I began the three-day process knowing next to nothing about Havening, and I left with a comprehensive understanding of why and how it works. I even passed a neuroscience exam after the training, yet I struggled to pass high school science classes! Nicole and Holli did an excellent job of explaining Havening Techniques in a thorough yet accessible way, and I was able to immediately integrate this gentle modality into my therapeutic work. In just a few short months, Havening Techniques has already helped my clients heal, and I know it will have ripple effects of healing for years to come. This training was well worth it!” - Nicole Borneman, Pre-Licensed Provider
